Shared vs. VPS Hosting
For most small business owners, shared hosting is probably the most popular hosting solution out there. However, most shared hosting companies tend to over-sell their servers. For example, if a server is designed to handle 700 small websites, it is not uncommon for web hosts to host over 2,000 websites on the same server. In terms of pricing, lower the cost, more customers on a shared server. While some shared hosts monitor resources and kick their customers off for over using the resource, it is not a standard practice and some might just not take any action at all.
If you're looking for a web hosting solution for your business, here are some key points to consider before you make a final decision on a web host.
Shared Hosting Plans
- Lowest cost to host a website. Some web hosting companies have offers as low as $2.95 per month.
- Quick and easy to get setup and start running.
- In web hosting, you truly get what you pay for.
- Tend to over-sell their resources causing majority of their customers performance and uptime issues.
- If not monitored and regulated, few resource intensive websites can take over server resource, squeezing other customers.
- While most shared hosting companies claim unlimited hosting and bandwidth available, in realty, there is no such thing. Read their Terms of Service( ToS) to understand their regulations if you're using too much of their server’s resources.
- Technical support tend to be spotty with most shared hosting companies. If you need a lot of hand holding, shared hosting is not for you.
- Most shared hosts rely on the cPanel control panel. cPanel is fairly easy to use but it has too many quirks and limitation.
Virtual Private Servers (VPS) Hosting Plans
- VPS hosting offers pre allocated resources such as CPU, RAM etc. It it practically your own server and you can install anything that you want.
- While not as expensive as dedicated server, VPS hosting costs substantially more that shared hosting. Expect to pay four to five time more as compared to shared hosting.
- Watch for the level of support. Most lower end VPS plans tend to be unmanaged. With an unmanaged VPS, you may have bigger issues if you don’t have a server admin.
- VPS hosts offer far superior performance and higher uptime.
- With VPS hosting, you may also have option of paying only what you use. Rackspace Cloud and Amazon Cloud plans are few good examples.
- Technical support is minimal since you're supposed to manage your own server. Some companies, however, tend to be more accommodating with support requests.
